The Gorse Stone

Location -
Stanton Moor
Between Stanton-in-the-Peak and Birchover
Derbyshire
OS Grid Reference SK 2495 6266

The Gorse Stone is located on the lower Southern end of Stanton Moor just a couple of hundred metres from the Cork Stone on the moors edge with a wide view out over the local area.
Heathcote who excavated the moor in the 1930's imagined this stone as the gorsedd-dau where Druids would speak to the masses gathered below.

From Bakewell take the A6 Matlock road, follow this till just past the signs for Haddon Hall where you take a right, the
first major junction the B5056 Youlgreave, after about 1km take the first left over the bridge, you then need the first left you come to signposted Stanton-in-the-Peak.
Just follow the road for around 2km where once up through the village you'll find yourself in open countryside, after a
long straight stretch of road you'll rise up to the high point of the moor, around 250 metres further along you'll see a parking area on your left by the access point to the moor.
Access the moor and just follow the obvious path taking care on the first boulder strewn section, after around 200 metres you'll see the Cork stone to your left and a post and wire fence to your right, at the end of the fence head downhill besides it then take the path off to the left that will lead you down through a tiny quarried area, you'll be able to see the Gorse Stone ahead of you, climb the stile to access it.
Note: Be aware if you head to the view point to the rear of the stone as there's a long drop off the edge. !
