Barbrook 3
Location -
Big Moor
Sheffield / Derbyshire border
OS Grid Ref - SK 28310 77350
Despite being the largest in terms of diameter this circle is probably the hardest in the group to locate on the ground due to the height of the stones and the grassland that surrounds them, a gps is advised though the circle can be found if your willing to spend time walking a bearing and searching the area it leads you to, you are looking for 30cm high stones in equally high grass though it is worth the effort as you'll be rewarded with one of the areas largest circles in an almost unchanged setting.
From Owler Bar take the signposted road for Hathersage, the B6054, park at the first small lay-by on your left, opposite the pump house.
Access the moor via the new gate and walk 500m roughly SSW on a bearing of 205 degrees, you'll initially be heading slightly downhill, the circle is located just over the first slight rise, if you hit the service road to the farm you've walked 250 metres too far and you'll need to reorientate yourself.
Head for the farmhouse, walk up the side of it with it to your left towards the reservoir gate and just before it you'll see a path heading off to your right, take this till it forks then follow either path for 200 paces, from the right hand path it's to your left 20 metres or so and vice versa.
There really are no obvious sightlines to lead you to this one but with a little perseverance and following the directions precisely i''m sure you'll find it easily enough and you'll be rewarded with one of the finest almost untouched circles in the area, you'll probably have the site to yourself as well unlike most others in this region as it's off the main path, if the weather is good take a picnic, this is one site where you'll find time and the pressures of modern life are lost, relax, lay back, but be watchful for the adders. !
