The Cuckoo Stone
Location-
Matlock Golf Course, Matlock Moor
Map Reference- SK314 623.
The Cuckoo Stone, a corruption of Cock Crow, stands under a Hawthorn tree on one of the fairways on Matlock's golf course. Said to turn around on certain days of the year at the cock's crow it is unclear whether the stones position is entirely natural or has been raised by man at some time. The lost circle of the Seven Brideron/Bretheren that once stood on Matlock Moor is only a short distance away to the North.
Access is via the Sandy Lane that starts south of the golf course on Gristone Road in Matlock, using this route the stone is visible from the public footpath that crosses the course, and comes out in Cuckoostone Dale. Otherwise speak nicely to the Greenkeeper and follow his directions.
