Gospel Hillocks Long Barrow.
Location-
Sterndale Moor, Buxton, Derbyshire.
O.S Grid Reference-
SK0863 7148.
As with Harrod Low this is a low lying long barrow orientated E-W and some 33m x 17m in size. The disturbed and cratered mound has been in its current state since Thomas Bateman recorded the monument in the 1840's; he thought it so ruined he did not waste his time on excavating it. It was thought Lewis investigated the mound a little later but his plans suggest the barrow he dug was somewhat smaller although in the same area. A later Bronze Age round cairn, in quite good condition, can be seen in the field adjacent to the long barrow.
The barrow can be seen from the roadside on the King Sterndale road off the A515 Ashbourne - Buxton.
