Harboro' Rocks.
Location-
Hopton, Derbyshire.
O.S Grid Reference-
SK24 55
Harboro' or Arbour Low Rocks is an impressive dolomitic limestone outcrop overlooking Carsington Pastures to the south. The distinctive rocky outcrop has a long history of human activity attached to them and were perhaps considered a special place in prehistory.
A 50 000year old handaxe was recovered from the fields surrounding the rocks and in the cave on the rocks themselves not only were Neolithic and Bronze Age artefacts found within it; but also items from the Upper Paleolithic. There was once a Neolithic passage grave on the summit and the near-by passage grave of Green Low is aligned to the rocks. And along it's eastern terraces an Iron Age settlement once flourished.
On the summit are several interesting rocks. The Pulpit Stone near to the trig point and the Roman Chair, (the area was an important Roman lead mining centre), which was mindlessly damaged in 2004/5.
The rocks are concessionary access land and parking is near to the Hopton Works at the foot of the rocks.
