White Rake Long Barrow.
Location-
Longstone Moor, Great Longstone, Derbyshire.
O.S Grid Reference-
SK1979 7476.
Perhaps the best preserved of Derbyshire's long barrows. It is unfortunately situated on private ground belonging to the quarry company who own most of the moor. The White Rake lead workings pass the barrow by a 20m gap.
Measuring 42m long by 18m wide the original Neolithic long barrow was between 0.5m to 1m in height. Orientated E-W a later Bronze Age barrow built on its eastern end takes the height up to 1.5m.
Situated on a false ridge on Longstone Edge the views are limited to the north over Middleton Dale and the Eyam and Abney Moors.
Although the round barrow has a pit in its centre there have been no recorded excavations.
